About Omega Lamplighters

The Lamplighters were a mentoring group founded in 1995 by the late Bro. Basileus
Sherman B. Whites and Dr. Richard J. Strachan of the Sigma Alpha Chapter (Miami) of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Their theme, “Reach One, Save One,” was a part of their
mission to cultivate academic excellence, service, and brotherhood to young men

between the ages of 12-18.

Omega Lamplighters

Tuesday, September 15, 2008, the Omega Lamplighters Club was founded by Bro.
Basileus Royle King II (Upsilon Psi chapter, FAMU) and Bro. Simeon Nelson (Chi
Omega chapter) in Tallahassee. It combined the Omega Sparks program created by the
Theta Alpha Chapter (Dallas) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Lamplighters
Program from Miami. The program was piloted with 20 young men.

Sunday, February 15, 2012, the first official Omega Lamplighter class, “Optimus 20”,

was inducted into the program in Tallahassee, FL.

Mission
Statement

“To work with and establish productive relationships with young men and equip them with high leadership and academic skills. To offer support, mentorship, and guidance while assisting them in their transformation into Manhood.”

Houston Omega Lamplighters

On August 9, 2017, The Houston Omega Lamplighter Program was introduced on the
campus of Booker T. Washington High School by Brothers, Tavares Ferguson (Upsilon
Psi), Fredrick Maxie (Rho Beta Beta), Dr. Frank North (Tau Epsilon), and Jason
Richards (Chi Theta) with only a single member responding to our call. More than a
year later, on September 22, 2018, the first official Houston Lamplighter meeting was
held with three young men. On December 22, 2018, those three young became the first

Houston Lamplighter Class "3 Luminaries of Precedence".

The Houston Omega Lamplighters have mentored and prepared countless young men
across Houston to conquer the world by BUILDING THEIR BRANDS. We teach our
students that they alone possess the power to shape or reshape how the world views
them. We encourage and develop our students through meaningful dialogue, academic
preparedness, life skill workshops, community service, youth leadership conferences,
college tours, and leisure activities. Combining our dedication to Brand Building and
borrowing from the African Proverb "It takes a Village to Raise a Child," we were

inspired to adopt our own local Houston motto,

"Committed 2 Da Village...Committed 2 Da Brand!"
